Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a blanket term for an enterprise operating in a well-defined geographic area where certain economic activities are promoted by a set of policy measures which are not applicable to the rest of the country.
Globally Successful SEZs offer immediate access to high-quality infrastructure, uninterrupted power supply, clearly titled land, public facilities, and support services.
Keeping in view the great success of SEZs around the globe, the Government of Pakistan has passed Special Economic Zone Act on September 13, 2012
These are the main postulates of Revised Economic Zone Act:
According to the SEZ Act, Government of Sindh has established Special Economic Zone Authority (SEZA), Sindh which is headed by Chief Minister, Sindh. Pursuant to the SEZ Act, the SEZA Sindh is responsible for, inter alia, the preparation of zone applications, selection of developers, negotiation of development agreements, preparation of zone regulations for a SEZ, monitoring the compliance of the developers with the zone regulations, and furnishing bi-annual reports to the BOA in respect of the SEZs in the respective province.
